HMRC’s latest factsheet explains who they consider to be ‘deliberate defaulters’, that’s tax evaders to you and me, and how they intend to monitor them. Most interesting is that even if you come completely clean with your tax affairs you are very likely to be continually monitored by HMRC’s specialist unit for years to come.
A handy toolkit from HMRC
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) are not renowned for providing clear and accurate advice but they have recently created a series of new ‘toolkits’ which appear to be bucking that trend.
Beware the surcharge
Hopefully, most people will have filed their Tax Returns by the deadline of 31st January and, also hopefully, most will have paid the tax falling due on that date too.
For those that didn’t, any 2009/10 tax still outstanding after 28th February will be subject to an additional 5% penalty (or surcharge). This is calculated only[...] Read more »
A wake up call for HMRC
Since HMRC regionalised all their main tax offices and set up a number of call centres in remote parts of the UK it has been progressively more difficult to get hold of the right person at the other end of the line. Anybody who has used the Self Assessment Helpline will know that it can[...] Read more »
Keep your eye on due dates for tax payments
HMRC are reminding employers to be careful that PAYE payments made electronically have been cleared into HMRC’s bank account by the due date. Many employers have taken advantage of the electronic payment option which generally gives a later payment date of 22nd of the month. However HMRC are stressing that where the 22nd falls on a non banking day (weekend or Bank Holiday) that the payment may need to be made earlier to ensure that HMRC has cleared funds by the due date. HMRC need to have received cleared funds by the last bank working day before the 22nd.
HMRC getting low on cash
HM Revenue & Customs released their annual income figures today for the year to 5th April 2010. I guess they would have just made the tax return filing deadline of 31st January if it applied to them. Moira Stewart will be very pleased.
Time to get your records in order
HMRC is planning a programme of Business Records Checks that will review both the adequacy and accuracy of business records within the ‘small and medium enterprise’ (SME) sector.
Free advertising for Santander?
Not content with advertising heavily in the playboy world of Formula One, Santander appear to have subversively chosen a less exciting place to plug their wares – HMRC’s payment website.
Those familiar with making Self Assessment payments in January will be aware that the usual site for paying via debit or credit card is www.billpayment.co.uk/hmrc. However,[...] Read more »
Cheap fuel for helping clear roads..
HM Revenue & Customs has announced that farmers (and presumably anyone else with a suitable vehicle) will be permitted to use ‘Red Diesel’ (Rebated Heavy Oil) on public roads, when helping to grit or clear roads in rural areas during the current period of extremely cold weather.
Coming clean on your offshore investments
If anybody has been seduced into keeping investments in offshore funds in a bid to avoid paying UK tax on them then it may not come as a surprise that you should have been declaring income from worldwide resources on your UK tax return, unless perhaps you qualified for a few of the limited exemptions available to non-UK domiciled individuals.
